SANTA CRUZ – Early on the morning of September 12 (2:38 a.m.), while most of the community slept, a burglar prowled. Fortunately the Santa Cruz Police Department’s Graveyard Team was also awake, alert and patrolling.

A call came in about a burglary in progress at 1230 Mission Street. Responding officers soon saw 41-year-old Jesse Avila, trying to flee on his bicycle.

An officer caught and detained him, as Avila resisted. However his resistance didn’t prevent him from receiving the handcuff handshake.

The transient Avila had “pliers, pipes, and multi-tools on his person along with two backpacks and other assorted burglary tools.”

As Avila is already on probation, he is not permitted to carry burglary tools.  He was booked for attempted robbery, probation violation, possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest.

He also had a felony warrant and a misdemeanor warrant.
