‘Strange vehicle’ turns out to be stolen

MARIPOSA – A property owner spotted what they though was  a”strange vehicle” as it sat parked at a nearby empty property. The concerned property owner then called the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office on the afternoon of July 11th and was able to provide officers with the license plate number of the vehicle.

The next day the vehicle was spotted in the 49er shopping center when officers stopped it. It turns out that the vechile, a Mercury Mountaineer had been stolen the day before in Merced.

Officers made contact with 25-year-old Fresno resident Kayla Johnson, who was the sole occupant of the stolen Mountaineer  and she was subsequently placed under arrest.

Johnson was “arrested and booked into the Mariposa County Adult Detention Center” and her bail was set at $30,000.

She was booked on the following offenses:

  • 10851(a) – unlawful taking of a vehicle
  • 496(a) receiving stolen property
