LOOMIS – A young couple from Santa Cruz ended the year shoplifting, and getting caught, at a Raley’s in Loomis.

The duo walked out of the grocery store, followed by a loss prevention employee who confronted them. Apparently thinking he could fight his way out of it, the male suspect began fighting the employee, pulled out a knife, and cut the employee’s finger.

The knife was dropped in the ensuing struggle but the other half of this inept crime team, a female, picked up the knife. Her male partner shouted to her to stab the employee.

However, a Good Samaritan passing by, carrying a concealed weapon, drew it and commanded the female suspect to drop the knife, which she did.

The PCSO notes that “the Good Samaritan is a registered CCW holder with a permit from Calaveras County.”

25-year-old Brandon Smith and 23-year-old Elizabeth Almand were arrested and charged with robbery and conspiracy. Smith was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

They had tried to steal $50 worth of items from Raley’s..
