SAN JOSE – The San Jose Police department reported on an officer involved shooting that occurred around 10:06 AM near the 2800 block of Barrow Court and Barberry Lane on November 24th, 2018.

The suspect 31-year-old Mario Manuel Caballero confronted the victim in her residence and demanded that she leave. According to Chief Eddie Garcia, “the agitated suspect was armed with a handgun in his waistband.”  It was suspected that Caballero was high on narcotics and had been for some time.

After multiple calls to 9-1-1 and an escalating scene, San Jose Officers responded to the residence.  The female victim reported to police that Caballero had fired several rounds at the residence before police responded to the scene.

When Officers arrived, Caballero was outside the residence and began to fire on arriving officers.

Responding patrol units fired back at the suspect, causing him to re-enter the residence to avoid further gunfire. It was suspected that he had been hit by gunfire.

However, the severity was unknown at the time. San Jose MERGE SWAT units responded to the scene, and a vehicle barrier was put in place to help protect the nearby residents from coming into contact with possible gunfire.

The standoff lasted for multiple hours before the suspect surrendered and was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

Caballero was booked on multiple counts of attempted murder through the use of a loaded firearm, illegal possession of a loaded firearm, being under the influence of a controlled substance and multiple parole violations.
