SONOMA – As this story ends, Dominic Gates showed up 8 hours later, still cuffed, at a police substation.

In the first place, a disturbance call came in from the Chevron station at 12:30 a.m. It was a public intoxication situation in the 500 block of W. Napa.

A deputy arrested Gates and took him to the substation. When the deputy came back out to bring Gates in, he saw the suspect jumping a nearby fence.

Gates had slipped his handcuffs to the front of his body. His small frame assisted him in his escape.

Establishing a perimeter and calling in the helicopter proved ineffective in nabbing the fleeing subject. They called off the search.

After daybreak, Gates returned to the substation on his own accord, with handcuffs still on.

His charge is public intoxication and escape from custody. His bail is $2,500.
