MERCED – Two years ago, he tried to kill his two-year-old daughter. On May 15 of this year, a jury convicted him of attempted murder and felony child abuse.
42-year-old Gerardo Ruiz-Lopez finally faced the music after the sad incident. On July 10, 2016 Lopez sent texts to his ex-girlfriend, who is also the mother of the little girl.
Officers responded to where the suspect and the girl stayed and forced their way in. They discovered father and daughter in a bedroom closet, unresponsive.
Their condition came about from two five-gallon p[propane tanks with their safety lines cut.
Both survived. Ruiz-Lopez attempted to plead insanity in the incident but a jury didn’t buy it.
The suspect faces a sentence of 7 years to life in prison, to be rendered on June 7.
