Homicide Suspect on the Loose

DUNSMUIR – On Saturday afternoon a call from a residence in the 6400 block of Dunsmuir Avenue to the SCSO from a  woman who was concerned for her safety.  It was her son who was the source of her concern.

Deputies who arrived discovered a deceased individual in a room of the residence.  43-year-old Michael Hernandez III was identified as a suspect in the death. The victim’s Chevy Astro van was missing and presumed stolen by Hernandez.

Soon after the unoccupied van was discovered at Moon Lit Oaks Drive and South Main Street in Yreka.

The victim was identified as 66-year-old Kenneth Ray Jones. Hernandez remains on the loose at press time.

Sheriff Jon Lopey stated, “We urge anyone with information about this crime to contact the SCSO’s 24-hour Dispatch Center at (530) 841-2900. If anyone observes Mr. Hernandez, he should not be contacted but dial 9-1-1 and report the observation to law enforcement authorities. Mr. Hernandez is 43, is described as 5 feet, 9 inches in height, weighing 195 pounds, with black, short hair and he has brown eyes. Hernandez should be considered dangerous and he may be armed.”
