Arrest made in rape of female high school jogger in Palo Alto

PALO ALTO –  The Palo Alto Police Department in cooperation with the Oakland and Richmond Police Departments have made an arrest in a recent sexual assault.

A wanted suspect was arrested over the weekend for the sexual assault of female teenage jogger near the intersection of Arastradero and Deer Creek Roads (near Stanford University).

The female teenage jogger was attacked by the suspect on March 28, 2018, as she jogged past him.  The suspect dragged the young victim from the jogging trail, holding her at gunpoint while raping her.  A similar incident also occurred in Oakland in which a man had assaulted and robbed a woman while holding a gun to her head.

The suspect, 29-year-old Eduardo Antonio Chavarria-Diaz of Richmond was arrested Sunday morning on the 100 block of South 9th Street in Richmond, in connection with the March 4, 2018, assault of a woman who was robbed and assaulted in the parking lot of Martin Luther King Regional Shoreline in Oakland. DNA also linked  Chavarria-Diaz to the brutal assault of the young female teen in Palo Alto.

According to Palo Alto police the suspect was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail and has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, and sexual penetration by force.
