REDDING // What started out as a welfare check on a potentially suicidal subject ended in an arrest for assault with a deadly weapon on March 21st.

Just before 10:30 AM, Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on the 2000 block of Matamoros Street, having received a report that someone in the area may be suicidal. As they arrived on scene, the subject — later identified as 24-year-old Brandon Osborne — bolted from his vehicle on foot.

Deputies then searched Osborne’s property and found him hiding near a thicket of bushes and trees, brandishing a knife and refusing to obey commands. He then took off toward another residential area, still armed.

As deputies gave chase, Osborne dropped the knife and headed southeast. When they noticed he was heading for Prairie Elementary School, the Sheriff’s Office put in a call to request that the school go on lockdown, unsure if Osborne was armed with any other weapons.

Shortly after the lockdown was initiated, deputies caught up to Osborne along Dersch Road, just northwest of the school, and took him into custody. After being examined and cleared for arrest at Mercy Medical Center, he was booked into the Shasta County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon.
