MVPD Teams with RATTF Catch Fitness Center Burglar

MOUNTAIN VIEW– The Mountain View Police Department has made an arrest of a wanted burglary suspect responsible for numerous thefts that occurred at local fitness centers in which the suspect broke into lockers in order to steal car keys and other personal belongings.

According to MVP, “On Dec. 11, 2017, a man, later identified as 36-year-old San Jose resident Efrain Torres, checked into the 24 Hour Fitness on the 500 block of Showers Drive.”  Torres than continued to enter a secured locker area, breaking into one and stealing a male victim’s car keys and wallet.  Torres took the victim’s car and used his credit cards at multiple locations before the theft was detected.

Torres committed similar burglaries and vehicle thefts that started in Palo Alto on Nov. 25, 2017, along with another in San Jose on Dec. 13, 2017.

On January 2, 2018, Torres entered the City Sports Gym on Grant Road in Mountain View and proceeded to the locker room where he broke into a locker and stole the victim’s keys and wallet, again using the victims credit cards at multiple locations before ditching the victim’s car and personal belongings as he made his getaway back to San Jose.

In partnering with the Regional Auto Theft Task Force (RATTF), Mountain View Detectives were able to locate Torres in San Jose and obtain a warrant for his arrest. “Torres was arrested on six counts of burglary, six counts of identity theft, five counts of misuse of a credit card, five counts of vehicle theft, and a hit and run,”  according to MVPD.  His bail has been set at $1,000,000.
