SANTA ROSA // Police have arrested a man in connection to a fire at Roseland Self Storage after discovering evidence that the fire was caused by the illegal manufacture of butane honey oil.

On January 20th just after 2 PM, police and Santa Rosa Fire personnel arrived at 555 Roseland Avenue to find one of the buildings fully ablaze. After the fire was extinguished, officers discovered evidence that someone had been using the space to manufacture butane honey oil.

Police quickly identified the suspect as Eric Alexander Chait, a homeless man reportedly staying at Camp Michela. Chait had allegedly been smoking a cigarette while handling butane when the cigarette fell to the ground, igniting the fire.

Several storage units were destroyed, while numerous others sustained considerable smoke and heat damage, the costs of which total over $200,000.

Chait has been arrested and booked into the Sonoma County Jail for manufacturing of a controlled substance and unlawfully causing a structure fire. The case remains under investigation by Santa Rosa PD Property Crimes detectives.
