Serial Strip Mall Burglary Spree Suspect Arrested

Vincent Joseph Campbell

LOS ANGELES – LAPD announced yesterday the arrest of Vincent Joseph Campbell for a series of commercial burglaries in the Van Nuys and North Hollywood Areas. Patrol units responded to an alarm call at the 13300 block of Victory Boulevard around 5 AM on September 30. The owner alerted responding officers to a suspect attempting to take the cash register.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Van Nuys Patrol and Burglary detectives stated that officers recognized the suspect from numerous Crime Alerts of surveillance videos showing Campbell smashing the front window or prying the rear door to businesses located in various strip malls in the area.

Detectives had issued Crime Alerts and attended roll call, providing information and photographs to patrol officers. The suspect would cut power to the strip mall, attack surveillance cameras by removing or smashing them on the ground, pull alarm pads from the walls, then ransack the businesses. After causing extensive damage, the suspect took cash registers, computers, cash, jewelry, and tools.

A perimeter was established when Campbell refused commands to exit the business, punched through the drywall of the business next door, and secreted himself in the crawlspace between the ceiling and roof with a stolen handgun.

Metropolitan K-9 units took Campbell into custody without incident. Detectives recovered evidence from a vehicle connecting Campbell to Van Nuys burglaries. A search warrant later that day resulted in the recovery of additional evidence connecting Campbell to numerous burglaries, and has been linked to over 20 commercial burglaries during the two-week spree.

Detectives filed 22 counts of commercial burglary and one count for ex-con with a gun. Campbell has prior arrests for burglary, grand theft auto, weapons and narcotics. The dollar amount of damage caused by Campbell is extensive.

Detectives have provided Vincent Campbell’s photos, and are asking for the public’s assistance in locating additional victims or unreported incidents.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Van Nuys Area Detectives at (818) 374-9500.
