Store Owner shot and killed in night time robbery

Hieu “Charlie” Ly

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Police responded to a robbery/homicide that occurred on August 8, 2017, around 11:00 PM inside a liquor store near Quimby and S. White Road. The news came as a frantic phone call to 9-1-1 was received just moments after a masked male suspect shot and killed the store owner.

The suspect demanded money from the wife of the victim who was standing next to the register. However, as the owner of Jim’s Liquor Mart was resting below the counter, he lifted himself to confront the robber and refuse his request.

According to a relative at the scene, the owner was then shot before the robber demanded the man’s wife open the cash register. He also knocked the phone out of her hand as she tried to call for help as her husband lay bleeding on the floor. After the wife failed to open the register and, failing to open the drawer himself, the suspect fled the scene without taking any money from the cash register.

57-year-old Hieu “Charlie” Ly, of San Jose, was pronounced dead at the scene as medical response teams arrived to try and save him. He died from his injuries soon after being shot.

Once arriving on scene homicide investigators began collecting video surveillance of the intruder’s entry. The suspect was wearing a mask to cover his face.
