DNA Links Man to 2013 Rape

Sergio Moreno Lopes

SANGER – Good police work and patient perseverance finally resulted in the arrest and conviction of a rapist.

In July of 2013 an elderly woman was raped in her residence in the 300 block of J Street.  The attacker fled the scene as authorities were collecting evidence.

One month later, after a burglary in Parlier, police made a DNA match to the rape a month earlier.  Even though they had a match, the suspect was not in the CODIS system.

Then in the fall of 2015, a man was arrested on other charges and booked into the Fresno County Jail.  It was then that they made a match to 36-year-old Sergio Moreno Lopes.

Lopes’ DNA matched that of the other two crimes.  He was charged with rape and other offences.

After being found guilty, Lopes was sentenced on Friday to 32 years to life in prison.
