Thief Tries to Grab Wallet, Steals Mail Instead

Christopher Andrew Caples

SAN LUIS OBISPO – 45-year-old Christopher Andrew Caples evidently had the idea that if he demanded someone’s wallet while they were at the post office, that he would come away with a wallet.

On Monday evening Caples approached a man at the post office at 893 Marsh Street with that plan in mind.  After several unacknowledged demands, Caples knocked the man down and instead rummaged through the open mail box, departing with pieces of the victim’s mail instead.

A helpful citizen followed Caples as he walked away and retrieved the stolen mail.  Another citizen followed the suspect and, when SLOPD arrived, led them to Caples, who was then arrested and identified by the victim as his attacker.

The SLOPD remarked, “The quick apprehension of suspect CAPLES demonstrates the effectiveness of Law Enforcement and the Community working together to keep San Luis Obispo safe.”

Caples was booked for robbery and his bail was set at $30,000.
