WATSONVILLE — Police have two in jail on charges of burglary, criminal threats, brandishing of a firearm, negligent discharge of a firearm, illegal possession of an assault weapon, and possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle after the pair’s attempted home invasion on the 600 block of McKenzie Avenue.

Police were dispatched to investigate a report of a man with a gun at a residence and, as they made their way over, were advised that the suspect had fired a shot before fleeing in a grey Dodge Charger.

Officers were told upon arrival that 36-year-old Sebastian Anguiano and 36-year-old Melquiadez Campos Hernandez had shown up at the house to pick up personal effects from his ex-girlfriend, who ended up not being home at the time.

They were told his property wasn’t there and that he should leave. Both individuals then forced their way into the home and Anguiano brandished a shotgun, threatening to shoot if he was not given his property.

Eventually, those at the home convinced him to leave. However, as he left, Anguiano fired a shot into the air. While officers spoke with witnesses, the grey Charger was spotted by other officers out on Main Street.

A high-risk stop was conducted and the two occupants were taken into custody. They were later positively identified as Anguiano and Hernandez.

A search of their vehicle produced a loaded 12-gauge shotgun, a loaded revolver, and an unloaded assault rifle, along with numerous rounds of ammunition.

Both suspects were later booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.
