ELK GROVE — A high school teacher in Elk Grove has been arrested on suspicion of engaging in oral sex with a minor female.

This marks the seventh time an Elk Grove Unified School District employee has been investigated for inappropriate sexual behavior over the past 13 months.

John Richard Young, 53, was arrested on Tuesday, May 2, 2017, after Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputies began investigating the Sheldon High School teacher in March following allegations he had been engaging in inappropriate sexual behavior with a student over the past year.

A statement released by the Elk Grove USD on May 3, 2017, read that all allegations of misconduct are taken very seriously. The employee was immediately placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.

Elk Grove Unified serves 63,000 students and is the largest school district in the Sacramento region.

Young, who taught Spanish at Sheldon High School, was arrested at his home and is being held on $25,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Sacramento Superior Court today.

“The district is offering counseling to the victims and their families,” says Xanthi Pinkerton, a spokesperson for the Elk Grove Unified School District. “If it is beyond our ability to manage, we have other resources. We want to find out what they need.”
