Man Accused of Carjacking after Fleeing Vehicle Collision

OAKLAND – Police officers from the cities of Berkeley and Oakland converged on a carjacking suspect Monday afternoon, after the suspect stopped at a gas station near the West Oakland BART train station.

36-year-old Cody Rice was arrested on suspicion of carjacking a truck, shortly after fleeing on foot from a crash involving other vehicles on April 10, which occurred on San Pablo Avenue, north of University Avenue in Berkeley.

The stolen truck was located by Oakland police in less than an hour at 1:44 p.m., at a gas station on Seventh Street in the West Oakland neighborhood.

Police said Rice was initially uncooperative in the standoff with officers, but that he surrendered and was arrested by officers from Berkeley and Oakland at 2:23 p.m.

Rice is charged with carjacking and misdemeanor hit and run. He’s in custody at Santa Rita Jail, with his bail amount set at $100,000.
