Conviction in DUI Crash that Killed Girlfriend

Yadira Alvarez

LOS ANGELES – It was supposed to be a happy occasion – a man’s 25th birthday, celebrated with his girlfriend.

It apparently started out that way back on June 9, 2016, but the evening had deadly consequences.

25-year-old Giovanni Guzman was out on the town celebrating his big day with his girlfriend, 23-year-old Yadira Alvarez.

The couple had dinner, and then went to a bar where Guzman drank alcohol. In fact, his blood content became twice the legal limit.

They then became involved in a fight, during which time Guzman stopped his car.  A Good Samaritan also stopped and tried to help.

Guzman sped off when when the bystander called 911 and almost immediately crashed into a median.

Alvarez was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Guzman pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter, was convicted of the charge and now faces a possible sentence of 11 years in prison.

The couple had recently reunited after a one year breakup.
