SACRAMENTO — A Sacramento man was arrested this week and charged in the fatal shooting of a woman he was dating.

Joshua Anthony Childers (25) was arrested early Wednesday, March 29, 2017, after the Lincoln Police Department received a 911 call from a man who said he shot a woman. The shooting occurred at a mobile home in the 8200 block of Coed Lane in Sacramento County.

Upon entering the home, Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies found the victim, Victoria Yasmin Vasquez (24) with a gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the call to authorities, a Placer County deputy in the area found Childers in his vehicle nearby and called for backup. Childers was placed into custody and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of murder. He was scheduled to be arraigned in court on Thursday, March 30, 2017. A motive for the shooting remains unclear.

A friend of the victim called Vasquez a “super mom” who will be missed.

“She gave up her whole life when she had her son. He was her whole life,” said Kajsa Hawkins.

Hawkins said she last saw Vasquez a few weeks ago when they met up for an ice cream playdate with their children. Vasquez had a three-year-old son, whom she shared with Childers.

“They broke up and got back together quite a bit,” said Hawkins.
