Homeless Man Arrested, Charged with Rape Near University

BERKELEY – Police interrupted and arrested a homeless man accused of raping a woman early Tuesday morning in the downtown area, a few blocks away from the campus of the University of California.

Officers responded to a report from a witness that a man was sexually assaulting a woman, near a fence surrounding a vacant lot at the corner of Telegraph Avenue and Haste Street.

Upon arrival, police said the assault was stopped and paramedics were called to transport the woman to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

The suspect Theodore Johnson, 46, whose last known address was in Oakland, was arrested January 17 at 3:17 a.m., charged with rape and battery. He’s in custody at Santa Rita Jail and his bail was set at $100,000. His arraignment is scheduled for January 19.

It should be noted that Johnson has an extensive arrest record, including numerous drunk in public arrests as well as previous charges of rape, sodomy, sexual battery and battery.
