Notorious Santa Cruz Drug Dealers At It Again

Calvin Carlson (L) and Suzanne Winchel (R)

SANTA CRUZ — Two notorious drug dealers — 52-year-old Calvin Carlson and 40-year-old Suzanne Winchel — are behind bars again after a police officer saw them selling drugs out of their vehicle on Thursday evening at Harvey West Avenue and Dubois Street.

At around 5:22 PM, an officer on active patrol saw Carlson, who was not unknown to police already, sitting in his vehicle. The officer decided to keep an eye on him for a bit and noticed he wasn’t alone, but rather in the company of Winchel, another known drug dealer.

The two seemed to be engaged in suspicious activity, corroborated by the comings and goings of several people in the short time the officer was watching. He decided to initiate contact and spoke with Carlson and Winchel. A group of people who’d been speaking with them moments ago tried to intervene and prevent a search of the vehicle, throwing things even further into suspicion.

Additional officers were called for backup and the group of interlopers broke up before they could be arrested for obstruction. The suspects, both of whom have an extensive criminal history with the Police Department, were arrested for possession of controlled substance for sale after a search of their vehicle turned up 9 grams of methamphetamine and $4,000 in cash. Their bail is set at $10,000 each.

It was also discovered that Carlson was recently out on bail with search terms relating to controlled substances, paraphernalia, and drug sales.
