MARYSVILLE — In the early morning hours of Tuesday, December 28th, police were called upon to assist the Fire Department after reports of a fire at an apartment complex.

Once on scene, they discovered an entire wing of the complex in flames. Investigation later determined that the apartment from which the fire originated had been occupied by 20-year-old Atavien Whitesell and his pregnant girlfriend.

Further investigation turned up cans of butane and other items used to make honey oil. Police believe the manufacturing process is what caused the fire.

Whitesell was eventually located and arrested for arson and manufacture of a controlled substance. He is housed at the Yuba County Jail on $500,000 bail.
