Man Sets Personal Belongings On Fire, Barricades Himself

Casa de Miranda apartment complex in San Ysidro

On Christmas Eve around 7 p.m., a man decided to take his personal belongings, including clothes and food, and put them on the stove in the Casa de Miranda apartment complex. He then proceeded to turn on the gas burner, igniting all of the items on fire.

When neighbors began smelling the smoke from the fire in the man’s apartment, they immediately called 9-1-1. When the fire department arrived, they noticed that the door to the residence was locked, so they barged in. Inside they saw the man, who supposedly was barricading himself during the fire.

The man was identified as  Octavio Ortiz, 45. Ortiz was detained by police and was booked into jail for Arson.

The Metro Arson Strike Team is investigating the incident.

No further information has been given at this time.
