Bicyclist, Two Others Victimized By Hit-And-Run Driver

On Thursday, December 10th, around 7:40 p.m., authorities located a crashed vehicle and bicycle near the intersection of Hwy. 99 frontage road and Moreland Street.

Laying next to the bicycle was a man who had been conceivably hit by a car. He was found dead at the scene. He was identified as John Eric Stevens, 27. Nearby the deceased bicyclist, the officers found a 1997 Honda with front-end damage. Inside the vehicle, there were two additional victims that were pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect fled the initial scene.

Authorities were eventually able to locate, detain and arrest the hit-and-run suspect. The suspect was identified as 23-year-old Matthew Barnec, a resident of Stockton.

A witness and a friend of Stevens reported that he overheard arguing coming from the 1997 Honda Civic. After a brief moment, he supposedly heard a couple of gunshots.

The two victims in the Honda were identified as Raymond Lawrence Schenone, 23, and Michelle Joanne Vargas, 23.

Detectives are still investigating the scene, and it has yet to be determined about how the victims died.

Barnec is being charged with suspicion of felony hit and run and is being held at the San Joaquin County Jail. More charges may arise as detectives continue to investigate the scene.
