Felony hit and run suspect that killed pedestrian arrested after brief investigation

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Police Department has announced the arrest of a a suspect who was involved in a felony hit and run that caused a fatality. According to police, the suspect driver was arrested after a brief investigation. Investigators were able to determine that the victim was struck by 24-year-old Jonathan Espino Ruiz.

According to San Jose Police Sgt. Enrique Garcia, “On Saturday, December 10, 2016, at 3:06 AM, San Jose Police Officers responded to a report of a person down at E. Hedding St. and N. 15th St. in San Jose.”  The victim was found several feet from the crosswalk where it is suspected that the driver failed to yield, striking an adult male victim who was in the roadway at the time he was hit.

Ruiz was subsequently booked into the Santa Clara County Jail for Felony Hit & Run.

This was the City of San Jose’s 42nd fatal traffic collision and 44th victim of 2016. This incident was also San Jose’s 18th auto vs. pedestrian fatality of 2016.
