Man Barricaded Inside House Arrested on Kidnapping Charges

Mario Martinez under arrest

UNION CITY— A distraught man who barricaded himself inside a home on the 33900 block of Railroad Avenue for several hours was arrested November 29th on kidnapping and other charges involving his ex-girlfriend.

Mario Martinez, 38, of Union City, was taken into custody by Fremont police at 3:03 p.m. who, along with officers from Hayward and Newark, assisted a Union City Police Department SWAT team.

Local police rushed to the home after receiving a 911 call from a woman whispering that she needed help and that someone had a shotgun. The call ended abruptly and a police dispatcher was unable to reconnect with her.

When Union City officers arrived, a woman left the house and told them that she’d been held captive for two days by her ex-boyfriend, who was then barricaded inside and refused to surrender himself.

Neighbors in the immediate vicinity were advised to shelter in place or evacuate as a precaution, because police believed the man was armed, while they attempted to negotiate a safe surrender.

Hours later, Martinez was arrested by Fremont police who served arrest and search warrants. He was booked at Santa Rita Jail at 9:19 p.m.

Martinez is scheduled for arraignment at the Fremont Hall of Justice on December 1. Besides kidnapping, he’s charged with false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon, making criminal threats and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
