SALINAS — 29-year-old Aziz Ahmed of Salinas is behind bars after nearly being shot by police during a high-risk incident on Friday night.

An unidentified caller reported watching an erratic driver brandishing a handgun near the intersection of Market Street and Williams Road. Police responded to the area in enough time to catch the vehicle still at the intersection, though a short pursuit ensued after Ahmed defied orders to step out of the car.

They reached the area of La Princess Market on Williams Road when officers initiated a high-risk stop and the pursuit came to a halt. Ahmed was reportedly extremely uncooperative, at one point even reaching into his waistband as if he were armed and proclaiming that he wanted police to shoot him.

A K9 unit was deployed and brought Ahmed under control long enough for him to be placed under arrest. A search of the vehicle revealed a pellet handgun.

Ahmed was booked into Monterey County Jail on charges of driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, and resisting arrest.
