Mother and Daughter Gunned Down Near Their Home, Suspect at Large

Luis, Carina and Jennabel Anaya

LONG BEACH – A man with a shotgun ambushed and murdered Carina Mancera (26) and her daughter Jennabel Anaya (4), for no apparent reason. Officers arrived at the “Shots Fired” scene before 9:30 p.m., August 6 at Locust Avenue and 9th Street, to find devastated husband Luis Anaya at the side of his gunned-down family.

A family member reported that the family had just parked their car on the street and started unloading their groceries. Anaya saw his wife gather groceries and walk the child toward their home. While Anaya carried the heavier bags and locked the car, he heard gunshots. Running towards his wife and daughter, he discovered his wife and daughter unresponsive. He tried to revive them until police arrived.

An anonymous neighbor reported that the suspect, armed with a shotgun, fired four times after jumping out of the back seat of a white 4-door Honda Civic. Approaching the mother and child, he shot them and fled in the vehicle.

Long Beach police reported that Mrs. Mancera was pronounced dead at the scene, and daughter Jennabel died Sunday morning at the hospital. Detectives are reviewing a nearby camera’s surveillance video while they search for the armed and dangerous gunman.

The community held a vigil with flowers and candles to support one another at the corner where this tragedy took place. Preschool teacher Becky Abernathy described student Jennabel as “Happy to learn, and looking forward to entering the big school – Kindergarten – in the fall.”

Long Beach Police are asking for any information which would help identify the shooter. You can anonymously leave information by calling (562) 435-6711 or Text TPLA and your tip to CRIMES (274637)
