SACRAMENTO — The Sacramento woman who has been accused of felony animal torture will appear in Sacramento Superior Court later this month.

The trial for Kayla Wright, 23, is scheduled for July 28, 2016. In addition to felony animal torture, Wright is also facing dog theft charges stemming from two incidents that occurred in December 2014 in a Carmichael neighborhood.

Wright is a suspect in the death of a dog found in a garbage can with a speaker cord wrapped around its neck. Authorities also say another dog was found with a cord around its neck and painter’s tape around its jaw, but it was alive and able to make its way back home. A third dog was found terrified hiding under a parked car on the evening of December 26, 2014 after its owner reported it missing.

Authorities were able to arrest Wright on January 7, 2015 after images of her from a neighborhood surveillance camera showed her with the dogs.

Wright has been held at Sacramento County Jail since her arrest. Records show she also has an outstanding warrant from Placer County.
