WATSONVILLE — 27-year-old Giovanni Cardona has been arrested for possession of several types of dangerous (and illegal) fireworks at Ramsay Park on July 4th in downtown Watsonville.

Just before 7 PM, officers conducted an area check in Ramsey Park on 1301 Main Street and happened upon a group of kids standing around the trunk of a vehicle.

As the two officers approached, several kids dispersed to reveal an adult suspect, identified later as Cardona, frantically trying to conceal a mortar type of firework. He then attempted to walk away but was stopped and questioned.

Officers then searched his vehicle and discovered several varieties of dangerous fireworks, as well as a loaded glock handgun containing a high-capacity magazine.

As it turned out, the gun had been reported stolen from Redding. Cardona was placed under arrest and booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.
