MONTEREY COUNTY — Couny DA Dean Flippo announced that Mexican authorities have arrested a suspect in connection to last month’s murder case out of Greenfield.

28-year-old Ernesto Hernandez of Soledad has been arrested on first degree murder charges for the death of 19-year-old Abigal Gasca-Chavez.

On March 29th, Greenfield PD responded to a house on 7th Street on reports of a homicide. Upon arrival, they discovered Gasca-Chavez dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigation soon revealed that the father of her son was responsible for the shooting and, with that, police secured a warrant for his arrest on April 1st.

On April 5th, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office took over as lead investigators. Further information had been developed that revealed Hernandez had fled to Mexico. With the aid of Mexican authorities, the U.S. Marshals office arrested Hernandez in Mexico on April 18th.

He was transported back to the United States and taken into custody in Los Angeles, then later transported to Monterey County where he entered a plea of not guilty in his arraignment.
