HOLLISTER — Hollister Police arrested a local man less than 24 hours after an early morning shooting that occurred in front of Johnny’s Bar on Sunday morning.

Paul Steve Cassarez, 46, was charged and booked for assault with a deadly weapon.

Police were called to the scene of a reported shooting at 1 A.M. at Johnny’s Bar in the 500 block of San Benito Street. Subsequent investigation revealed that an altercation between four people and at least one patron took place just southeast of the bar, leading to an eventual shooting out front.

One bystander sustained minor injury when hit by a stray bullet, but was treated at a local hospital.

Witnesses described the suspect as a Hispanic male about 5’8″ tall and 180 lbs, with a mustache and a short military-style haircut.

Authorities soon identified Cassarez based on the description and arrested him at his residence within hours on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

Police are asking that anyone with additional information contact Officer Weiss or the Hollister Police Department at 831-636-4330. Those wishing to remain anonymous are encouraged to call the We-Tip Hotline at 800-87-CRIME.
