Lebec Murder Suspect Arrested

LEBEC — A 58-year-old man who shot and killed another man in Lebec on Thursday night has been arrested.
Steve Gilmore was booked into the Kern County Jail on a single charge of murder.

According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place at around 9:30 p.m. on December 17, in the 500 block of South Drive in Lebec.

Deputies along with officers from the California Highway Patrol arrived on scene of a report of shots fired, and found a male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound lying in the street.

Medical aid arrived, but the victim died from his injuries at the scene.

Detectives responded and after a short investigation, learned that the victim had been shot by Gilmore after he was caught looking into one of his windows.

The victim, Benito Carillo, who detectives said was unarmed, tried to run away but was shot in the back by Gilmore. Further investigation revealed Carillo was knocking on the window to talk with Gilmore’s son.  The two were friends.
