BAKERSFIELD — A 23-year-old man was shot to death by police near a historic hotel in downtown Bakersfield on Sunday morning.

Investigators said that is when the officer returned fire, hitting the suspect, near The Mark restaurant in the 1600 block of Wall Street in downtown Bakersfield. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending review by the Critical Incident Review Board. No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.

According to the Kern County Superior Court web site, Celio pleaded no contest to forgery in February 2013, and pleaded no contest to a resisting arrest charge in December 2013.
