Suspect Steals Scooter, Threatens Victim with Knife

The Grover Beach Police arrested a man after he allegedly stole a scooter, and then later robbed a man of a cellphone.

According to Grover Beach PD, they received a report on Tuesday around 7:53 a.m. from a victim who said his 2006 Yamaha motor scooter had just been stolen. “The scooter was left under an awning in front of a garage at a residence,” GBPD Sergeant Sonny Gerber said .

Investigators stated that they received a report from park rangers from the Coastal Dunes RV Park around 9:58 am regarding suspicious activity along the railroad tracks near the RV Park. The rangers said they had observed two men dismantling a motor scooter. Investigators determined the scooter was the one that was reported stolen.

Police also determined the identity of one of the two suspects, Isaac Joseph Ponce, 22. However, both of the men left the area prior to the arrival GBPD officers. Ponce fled into the Coastal Dunes RV Park, where he confronted an employee. The employee stated that Ponce exhibited a large knife and threatened the employee, and demanded his cellphone.

Once Ponce fled that area on a bicycle, he was immediately contacted by GBPD officers and detained. Ponce was found in possession of burglary tools, the knife used in the attempted armed robbery, methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Ponce was also identified as the male adult observed dismantling the reported stolen motor scooter, and was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail for attempted armed robbery, exhibiting a deadly weapon, possession of reported stolen property, possession of burglary tools, vehicle theft, vehicle tampering, possession of a controlled substance, possession of controlled substance paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
