Holiday Fireworks Display Goes Wrong, One Arrested

SAN BENITO—The Hollister Police Department along with the Hollister Fire Department and American Medical Response responded to the 1200 Block of Brigantino Drive on a report of a explosion that occurred on Saturday the 4th of July around 10:30 pm.

An investigation into what actually happened revealed that “a large mortar rocket-launcher firework device” had been set up at a block party. As the device was lit, it fell over and the projectiles from it hit several people that were attending the block party, including small children.

Police arrested 35-year-old Hollister resident Shawn Gregory Bourdet as the person responsible for the incident. They stated that “Bourdet indicated to police that he was responsible for the incident and fully cooperated with the investigation.”

According to police, at last count five people were treated for injuries ranging from a possible broken leg to several children with moderate to severe burns. One of the victims, a child, was flown to a bay area hospital with severe injuries.

There was reports that several other victims transported themselves to a local hospital for medical treatment.

“This incident is a grim reminder of the dangers of fireworks, some of these children will be scarred for life,” Hollister Police Chief David Westrick said in a press release. “Please be responsible in your celebrations and call us with any information on those who possess and use illegal fireworks.”

This is an active investigation and the Hollister Police Department is asking any other victims to contact them at 1-831-636-4330.
