Lebec Man Arrested on New Year’s Eve for Setting Off Explosive Device

LEBEC — A Kern County man suspected of trying to detonate an illegal explosive device in a neighbors front yard on New Year’s Eve is in jail. Donald Corrigan was booked into the Kern County Jail on one count of malicious possession of a destructive device and possession of material to make a destructive device.

According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, Corrigan’s arrest stemmed from an incident that occurred about 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 31, when deputies responded to a call in the 2800 block of Highland Way in Lebec of a fire caused by a homemade explosive device made from a plastic garbage bag containing acetylene gas.

When they arrived. deputies said they discovered that someone tried to set off a destructive device in the victim’s front yard. The KCSO Bomb Squad responded and checked for other devices, but none were located.

The next day, at approximately 2 p.m., deputies served a search warrant at Corrigan’s home in the 700 block of Louise Way in Lebec, taking him into custody.
