Suspect Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run

A 56-year-old woman has been arrested in connection to a fatal hit-and-run that occurred yesterday morning in Rancho Cordova, according to an official press release issued by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

Madhu Lata Singh, 56, was reportedly booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on a felony hit and run charge, and is currently being held on $75,000 bail.

The accident occurred outside the VSP Optical Lab building in Fite Circle.

According to Sac Sheriff, on Wednesday, October 1, at about 6 am, officers from the Rancho Cordova Police Department responded to reports of a female victim injured in the roadway on Fite Circle, south of Horn Road. Upon arrival, officers reportedly found the 65-year-old woman had been the victim of a hit-and-run driver while she was walking to work. Medical personnel reportedly responded to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. The victim’s identity is reportedly being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Rancho Cordova motor officers and investigators reportedly responded to the scene as part of the investigation, and officers reportedly were able to locate a possible suspect vehicle a short distance from the collision scene. The detective on scene reportedly located the driver of the vehicle — later identified as Singh — and took her into custody.

Sacramento’s News 10 has reported that the victim was an employee at VSP Optical Laboratories, and that grief counselors were on site to help her co-workers deal with the incident. The director of VSP Global confirmed that information.

“Morning and lunch time, we’d see her walking or running back and forth,” said Jer Vang who works nearby. “It’s very sad. And the person who did this, it’s just pretty sad.”

Rancho Cordova Police Sergeant Gerald Lane said. “It looks like she was trying to cross the street so we’re not sure if she was in the crosswalk or a little bit south of the crosswalk.”

According to the suspect Madhu Singh’s Facebook profile, she is also an employee of VSP.

Rancho Cordova Police are attempting to find witnesses to the women’s death. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (916) 874-5115.
