Taft Man Arrested for Destruction of Evidence

TAFT — A 33-year-old Taft man was arrested on Thursday of last week for trying to ditch evidence after being arrested for possession.

Dwight Watkins was booked into the Kern County Jail’s Central Receiving Facility on charges of possession of a controlled substance, being under the influence of a controlled substance and destruction of evidence.

Deputies from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office said they arrested Watkins after they were dispatched to the 300 block of Crystal Street in south Taft at around 11:30 p.m. on May 29, for a “keep the peace” call.

When they arrived, deputies said they contacted Watkins, who was arguing with the occupants of the residence over his wallet, which was allegedly inside.

Watkins, who also had a misdemeanor warrant out for his arrest, became upset according to deputies and was taken into custody for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

He was first transported to Taft City Jail, where deputies said he tried to discard of a small amount of suspected methamphetamine on the patrol car seat where he was sitting.
