Fairfield Homeowner Allegedly Pulls Gun on Workers Blocking His Driveway

Fairfield resident James Cranford, 71, faces felony charges after allegedly threatening construction workers with a gun prior to retreating into his residence, instigating an hour and a half standoff with numerous Fairfield police officers.

At about 10 am on May 21, a crew working for Irish Construction Company based out of Sacramento was demolishing and re-configuring the sidewalk in from of Cranford’s home near the intersection of Hilborn Road and Glenwood Drive by Rolling Hills Park in West Fairfield. At that point, stated Irish Construction worker Luis Pelayo, Cranford emerged from his home and “he was cussing us out.”

The construction workers were performing subcontracting work to update cable connections under the sidewalk for AT & T, which had sent letters previously to residents in the neighborhood alerting them to the upcoming construction work. “We were just doing stuff, working on the cable,” said Pelayo.

Apparently Cranford didn’t get the AT&T letter, or ignored it. He wanted Pelayo and his co-workers to move their truck and stop blocking his driveway. Soon he delivered this message in no uncertain terms. He went back in his home and then came out the garage door armed with a pistol and pointed it at the workers. They retreated to their truck and called police. Arriving officers negotiated with Cranford and, after the standoff, got him to come out of his home peacefully. No one was hurt during the incident.

Cranford was lodged at Solano County on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. Bail and a court date have yet to be set.
