Citrus Heights Officer Involved in Fatal Shooting

Sacramento—Citrus Heights police officers responded to a call on Friday, May 23, 2014 at approximately 9:55 p.m. to the area of Woodmore Oaks and Sunrise Boulevard after receiving 911 calls from witnesses reporting a male suspect was assaulting a female. CHPD dispatch reported the suspect could be heard in the background making threats to kill the female.

Officers arrived on scene and the suspect fled on a bicycle. Officers chased the suspect through a large parking lot until he dropped the bicycle and continued on foot. The suspect fled through a neighboring residential area into an open field adjacent to a nearby school.

A law enforcement helicopter arrived on scene and located the suspect running into the school campus (The school was closed and there were no faculty or students on school grounds at the time of the incident). Soon after, an officer reported the suspect was not complying with orders and was reaching into his waistband. Officers on the ground made contact with the suspect in a confined area of the school. The suspect’s violent and irrational behavior throughout the incident led officers to believe they were in imminent danger. Officers fired their weapons striking the suspect. No officers were injured during this incident.

Officers on scene immediately rendered aid to the suspect. Sacramento Metro Fire arrived on scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital. The suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The suspect’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, once next of kin has been notified.

The Citrus Heights Police Department’s Investigations Division is currently investigating the incident, a standard practice for all officer-involved shootings which occur and involve Citrus Heights police officers. In accordance with the Citrus Heights Police Department’s policies and procedures, the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
