Fishermen’s fight ends in stabbing

FORT BRAGG, MENOCINO COUNTY – Two fisherman at a local business got into an argument Monday morning, May 12, which resulted in one being stabbed and the other arrested.

According to the Mendocino Sheriff’s Department, 36-year-old Kein Gonzalez and 28-year-old Esau Yam, who both worked at a local fishing company, started arguing at work, and as it heated up, they took it outside.

As the two prepared to engage in a physical battle, Yam pulled out a knife. As they fought, Yam stabbed Gonzalez in the forearm. Gonzalez struggled to get the knife from Yam, and both ended up with lacerations on their hands. After the fight, Gonzalez, the more severely wounded, was taken, or took himself, to Mendocnino Coast District Hospital, just a couple of blocks away. The Sheriff’s office was contacted, and deputies responded at 10:20 am to investigate the incident.

Deputies then went to the scene of the fight to try an locate Yam, but he was no longer there. But at 2:45 that afternoon, they were told he could be found in downtown Fort Bragg. The sheriff’s office requested Fort Bragg Police to respond to the location on the 300 block of Redwood Ave., where they detained the 5’1″, 105 pound suspect at 3:15.

Esau Che Yam was booked into the Mendocino Jail on charges of felony assault with a deadly weapon. Bail was set at $30,000.00.
