Suspect Arrested After Injuring 2 Firemen

A suspect is in custody after injuring two Sacramento Metro Fire Department firefighters with his vehicle, according to an official press release from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

Leontiy Kapakly, 23, was reportedly arrested and charged with three felony crimes, including assault with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence causing great bodily injury.

According to Sac Sheriff, this morning, Friday, May 16 at approximately 12:30 am, Sacramento Metro Fire Department responded to a medical aid call in the Watt Avenue/Elverta Road area on a report of a subject passed out inside of a vehicle with its engine still running. As reportedly fire personnel attempted to assess the driver’s medical needs, the suspect suddenly positioned the vehicle in reverse and stepped on the gas, taking the two firemen with him approximately 200 feet until the vehicle crashed into a tree, freeing the two firemen.

The driver then reportedly sped forward onto public streets, crashing into a parked vehicle as he fled. Shortly thereafter the vehicle was reportedly found parked and unoccupied in a residential driveway in the 7000 block of Ort Way. The suspect was reportedly found hiding in a backyard by a Sheriff’s K9 and apprehended.

The two Sacramento Metro firemen were reportedly treated for their injuries — one was treated at the scene, while the other was taken to a local hospital where he has reportedly sustained non life-threatening injuries.
