Fugitive sex offender could be in California

A convicted sex offender who escaped from custody in Montana may be hiding out in Southern California, traveling from Northern California in the Bay Area, according to the FBI.

Kevin Briggs was arrested earlier this month for assaulting a woman and a police officer. He was already on probation for illegal sexual intercourse and kidnapping.

Briggs, who has provided several different birthdates to officers, is in his mid-to-late 20s, authorities said. He once showed promise as a chemical engineering student, according to media reports.

Authorities hope that releasing Briggs’ photo in California will lead to his arrest. Anyone with information is urged to call the FBI at (858) 320-1800.

Update: Kevin Briggs was captured on Friday at 6:45 pm in Portland Oregon by US Marshals and Portland Police. He was spotted as a passenger in a van in southest Portland and arrested without incident.
