Grandma Arrested After Toddler Nearly Drowns in Fountain

FRESNO – The grandmother of a 2-year-old child who was pulled out of a Fresno front-yard fountain on Wednesday was arrested for child endangerment.

Chou Vang, 48, had been babysitting the toddler and another 4-year-old child at a home in the 8500 block of East Olive Avenue when the incident occurred. Vang and other adults were working in and outside the house while the two children played in the front yard without supervision for at least 30 minutes, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

The 4-year-old child alerted the grandmother that something was wrong around 12:30 p.m. When Vang went outside to investigate, she discovered the 2-year-old boy face down in a large fountain.

The boy was pulled out of the fountain and discovered to be not breathing. One of the family members performed CPR on the boy until deputies and EMS personnel arrived and took over.

The boy was taken to CommunityRegionalMedicalCenter and then to Children’s Hospital. He is currently on life support.

Vang was booked into the Fresno County Jail.
