More Suspects Sought in San Bernardino Beating Death

SAN BERNARDINO – Police are still looking for more possible suspects in the beating death of a man on Sunday.

Police said two men were beaten, but a 39-year-old unidentified man died after being involved in a physical altercation at 3 a.m. early Sunday with several people.  He remains unidentified, pending notification of family members.

Gerald Gonzalez, 20, of Highland, was arrested in connection with the homicide, according to San Bernardino spokesman, Lt. Paul Williams, adding, “the search for additional suspects is ongoing.” After the beating on West Union St., the victim was taken in a private vehicle to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in nearby Colton. He died at 12:15 p.m. The other victim, a 20-year-old male from San Bernardino, was treated and released for the same types of injuries, said police. Both victims suffered from severe head trauma, said police.

Once investigators arrived, it was determined that a co-worker of the victim was a suspect. Police, who said a verbal dispute led to the deadly altercation, located Gonzalez on Union St., arresting him without incident, later taken to West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

Williams noted that the death was San Bernardino’s 46th murder victim in 2013, one short of last year’s record total. Last year’s 47th homicide occurred within four miles of Sunday morning’s death.

As of Monday morning, no bail amount had been set for Gonzalez, who is not known to have had a prior criminal history, according to authorities.
