Police pin deadly crash on young driver

Santa Ana – A 20-year-old who was behind the wheel in a car crash that killed his friend is facing manslaughter charges.

Ulises Mendoza, Santa Ana, was arrested Thursday following the crash on North Fairview Street. Mendoza, who was driving with several passengers in his Honda Civic, reportedly lost control of his vehicle at about 1:15 a.m. and collided into a utility pole.

A 23-year-old male passenger died. Three other passengers were injured.
Investigators say Mendoza was under the influence, and plan to charge him with felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. He is being held on $100,000 bail.
