Suspect arrested in Bakersfield apartment blaze

BAKERSFIELD — A 32-year-old man suspected of setting a Bakersfield apartment complex on fire on Wednesday, was arrested on Thursday by deputies.

Jose Aparicio-Velasquez was booked in to the Kern County Jail on charges of arson of an inhabited structure and is currently being held on $50,000 bail.

1800 Quincy Street

According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, gang unit deputies were in the area of the 1800 block of Quincy Street on Nov. 13, when they noticed a fire that had begun to engulf an apartment complex.

Shortly after the blaze was knocked down by fire personnel, deputies developed information that the fire had been set while people were still inside.

Along with Kern County Fire Department arson investigators, deputies assisted in identifying Aparicio-Velasquez as the person who started the fire.

Aparicio-Velasquez was located and taken into custody at the intersection of Truxton Avenue and “Q” Street in downtown Bakersfield a few hours later.
