SPD Arrests Suspect in Arden Fair Mall Shooting

The Sacramento Police Department (SPD) has made an arrest in a shooting that occurred in the parking lot of Arden Fair Mall in July, according to an official press release.

John Montanez

23 year-old John Montanez was arrested on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, for attempted homicide.

According to the SPD, on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at 3:21pm, officers responded to reports of shots fired at Arden Fair Mall. Officers initially discovered that a male subject, armed with a handgun and in the company of a second suspect, began firing at two other male subjects. It was later discovered that there were actually three victims among the group fired upon.

No injuries were reported and a specific motive for the shooting is unknown at this time; however, an argument is believed to have occurred between the two groups right before the shooting.

After the incident, the victims and suspects are said to have fled the area. The SPD worked with the mall patrol to begin an investigation. The three victims were eventually contacted by responding officers, and confirmed to be uninjured.

The two suspects fled through a department store and made their way to a parked vehicle, fleeing the scene. An investigation was initiated and the vehicle was later located shortly after the incident. Further investigation then led to the arrest of Montanez.

According to the SPD, the investigation is still ongoing. Anything with information pertinent to this crime is urged to contact the SPD by calling the dispatch center at 916-264-5471 or Crime Alert at 916-443-HELP (4357).
